Critical Incident Briefing — July 28, 2026 — 2500 W Campbell Avenue

The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing video to provide details as we currently understand them, related to a death investigation that occurred on July 28, 2026.

Officers responded to an apartment complex near 26th Drive and Campbell Avenue just before 4 p.m. for a report of criminal damage. The 911 caller stated that a third party witnessed the suspect break the window of one of the apartments within the complex by smashing it with his head.

Upon arrival, officers contacted a man matching the description provided by the caller, who appeared to be acting lethargic and was bleeding from a wound to his face.

Officers asked the man to step out from between the building and bushes but he did not comply. Once additional resources arrived on scene, officers approached the suspect and took him into custody. The man was moved to the shade of a nearby vehicle where officers began to evaluate him.

Phoenix Fire Department personnel were requested and began treating him. PFD determined the man’s internal temperature to be 107°. Fire personnel began their cold-water immersion treatment in an effort to lower his body temperature.

The man was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

No officers or other community members were injured during this incident.

The officers involved in this incident are assigned to the Cactus Park Precinct and have between one and 10 years of service with the department.

This incident is the subject of an investigation being conducted by the Phoenix Police Department and will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete.
