Critical Incident Briefing - September 2, 2025 - 1700 W Tonto St.

The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video that includes audio, visuals and information related to an officer-involved shooting (OIS) which occurred on September 2, 2025, near 17th Avenue and Tonto Street.

The incident began when Special Assignment Unit (SAU) officers were serving a search warrant for another ongoing investigation.

The SAU team made an announcement at the door, knocked and began to force open the door. As they opened the door, a man inside fired shots towards the officers. One SAU officer returned fire, injuring the man.

Two males exited the apartment uninjured and were detained. The injured man exited the apartment, was detained by police and provided with medical aid before being transported to the hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department with life-threatening injuries.

The man is currently receiving treatment at the hospital for injuries he received and will be booked on related charges when he is released.

A handgun believed to be used by the shooter was located inside the apartment.

The officer involved in this shooting is assigned to the Special Assignments Unit and has over 17 years of service with Phoenix PD.

This incident is the subject of a criminal investigation being conducted by the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. It is also the subject of an administrative investigation being conducted by the Phoenix Police Department.

Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete.
