Phoenix Public Library Invites Community to Help Name a New Library

Phoenix, AZ — August 31, 2026 — Phoenix Public Library is pleased to announce the initiation of a community-wide campaign inviting residents to participate in naming the new library at Estrella Civic Space. True to a longstanding tradition, the naming options pay tribute to native Sonoran Desert plants, capturing the spirit and natural heritage of Phoenix.

From August 31 through October 2, 2026, community members are encouraged to engage in the online survey and select their preferred name from five finalists: Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba, Manzanita, and Senita. This campaign aims to select a name that truly reflects the vibrancy of the Phoenix community. Phoenix Public Library is recognized as a responsive resource; a place for learning, connection, and culture.

“Phoenix Public Library locations have always celebrated the beauty and diversity of our desert environment,” said Erin MacFarlane, Library Services Director. “We invite everyone to help us choose a name that will reflect how our libraries help shape futures, inspire generations and create a welcoming space for all.”

The survey is available online at phoenixpubliclibrary.org/library-updates/name-our-library. The selected name will be presented to the Library Advisory Board and the City of Phoenix Heritage Commission, and will require final approval from Phoenix Mayor and City Council.

Key Details

The chosen name will influence the design of the new library, and updates will be shared once the selection is made and the design process commences. This fall, residents will also have the chance to provide input and share their preferences for desired features in the new library.
