A new regional initiative is combining technology and outdoor education to engage Arizona kids in a big way. The Arizona Explorer Campaign, powered by Agents of Discovery®, is transforming public spaces across the region into dynamic learning environments using augmented reality (AR). From the S’edav Va’aki Museum to Arizona State University’s Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, participating partners are hosting interactive educational “Missions” on the free Agents of Discovery app. The app challenges players to become “Agents” and to complete cultural and nature-based challenges while exploring local parks, museums, and cultural landmarks. At S'edav Va'aki Museum, Agents who complete the mission will recieve an AZ Explorer Badge sticker as a prize!

Partners include: S’edav Va’aki Museum, Bureau of Land Management - San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area & Ironwood Forest National Monument, Town of Prescott Valley, City of Goodyear, Sedona Heritage Museum, Arizona State University - Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, Pinnacle Peak Park

Dr. John Bello, Assistant Director at Arizona State University - Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve says “We’re thrilled to be part of the inaugural Arizona Explorer campaign, using the AR platform to bring the preserve’s remarkable features to life and offer our guests unforgettable, immersive experiences throughout the campaign.”

The Arizona Explorer will run until April 12th. Anyone can join by downloading the free Agents of Discovery mobile app and completing “Missions” — interactive games at participating locations. Each Mission is made up of fun, educational “Challenges” that teach players about local history, culture, ecosystems, and even safety.

For example, at Sedona Heritage Museum Park in Sedona, players can discover new and exciting facts about Sedona’s history. At Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, players can explore the beauty and mystery of desert life.

Missions also feature a unique avatar, adding personality and creativity to the experience. At S’edav Va’aki Museum, players will encounter Agent Quinn the Quail, while at Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, players will meet Agent Dash the Boulder. Players who complete Missions while logged in are automatically entered into a prize draw, with more entries for each Mission completed.

Nicole Armstrong-Best, Museum Director from the S'edav Va'aki Museum says “We are excited to be able to allow our guests a different way to engage with and explore our museum and archaeological site using Agents of Discovery. Guests have really had fun with the AR components of the app.”
