Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Phoenix City Councilmembers, along with City of Phoenix leadership, and several community constituents gathered to honor local infrastructure trailblazer Martin “Marty” L. Shultz during a ceremony highlighting his accomplishments and unveiling the “Martin L. Shultz Way” ceremonial street sign at the corner of 4th Street and McKinley Street.

“Today, we proudly dedicate this ceremonial sign and event to honor a man whose vision, integrity, and unwavering commitment helped shape the Phoenix we know today,” Mayor Gallego said. “From street infrastructure and the light rail, to healthcare, higher education, and community leadership, Marty played a role in nearly every major system that supports Phoenix’s growth and quality of life.”

In the 1970s, Mr. Shultz served as Chief of Staff to three consecutive Phoenix Mayors; John Driggs, Tim Barrow, and Margaret T. Hance. Becoming a trusted voice and steady guide through pivotal moments in the City’s growth, Mr. Shultz’s influence is still felt today, as he remains a respected presence at the Office of the Mayor, Phoenix City Council, the Arizona State Legislature, and among several of Arizona’s elected leaders.

"Marty and I first worked together as co-chairs of Prop 104, which was the City’s transportation plan in 2015,” Mayor Gallego said. “At the time, I was a new councilwoman, and that was the largest municipal transportation plan in the country. We’re so grateful, that he chaired that – among many others – working together to help fund our city streets.”

Mr. Shultz devoted his life to shaping the future of Phoenix through decades of professional service and personal commitment. In his long career with Pinnacle West Capital Corporation, the parent company of Arizona Public Service (APS), he rose to Vice President of Government Affairs, helping lay the foundation for the success that APS and the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant continue to bring to the utility industry today.

“May this ceremonial street sign remind us of a leader who loves this city deeply and has worked every day to make it better for all who call Phoenix home,” Mayor Gallego said.
