Lateral Applicants

Requirements

  • In-State Laterals must be AZPOST certified.​
  • In-State Laterals who graduated from an Arizona POST law enforcement academy must have more than 36 months (3 years) of experience.​
  • Out-of State Lateral applicants must not be separated from their agency for more than one (1) year. ​
  • Out-of-State Laterals must have at least one (1) full year of experience as a call-taking patrol officer excluding academy time, administrative assignments or jail/detention officer duties.
  • Out-of-State Lateral applicants must have attended a state certified​ post approved academy. Self-sponsored academie​s are excluded.


In-State Lateral Application Steps​

Motorcycles
  • Complete an AZPOST Personal History Statement at my.azpo​st.gov and share it with the Phoenix Police Department. ​Record your AZPOST ID Number.
  • Complete the eligibily questionnaire Register for Police Lateral​ (in the search box type "Police Lateral"). Be sure to include your AZPOST ID Number.
  • Once the eligibility​ questionnaire is complete, please allow up to 3-4 weeks to be notified if you are selected to begin the hiring process.​ Upon review of the background packet, only the highest qualified applicants will be contacted and invited for an interview.

Out-of-State AZ Waiver Process

Applicants that are hired for a lateral police officer positition must meet/pass the following components during advanced training: 

  • Firearms Qualification
  • Tactical Driving Qualification
  • Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT)
  • Written Test (comprehensive test divided into three blocks). Study material will be provided. 

Application Steps​

  • Complete an AZPOST Personal History Statement at my.azpo​st.gov and share it with the Phoenix Police Department. Record your AZPOST ID Number.
  • Complete the eligibily questionnaire Register for Police Lateral​ (in the search box type "Police Lateral"). Be sure to include your AZPOST ID Number.
  • Once the eligibility​ questionnaire is complete, allow 1-2 weeks to be notified if you are selected to begin the hiring process. Upon review of the background packet, only the highest qualified applicants will be contacted and invited for a 1st Trip. 
  • Initially hired as a recruit pending successful completion of waiver exams. Promoted to officer at a higher step based on years of experience prior to FTO. Out-of-state laterals hired as recruits who do not successfully complete the necessary waiver exams within the times allotted or do not qualify with their firearm may be offered a police recruit position or be separated.​​​
