Police Officer Lateral Transfers

​Requirements

  • Out-of -State laterals must have at least one full year of experience as a first responder excluding academy time, administrative assignments or jail/detention officer duties.
  • In-State Laterals must have successfully​ completed field training.

Out-of-State Steps

  • Complete an AZPOST Personal History Statement (PH) at
    --> my.azpost.gov​ and share it with the Phoenix Police Department.
    • ​Record your AZPOST ID Number
  • Complete the eligibily questionnaire --> Register for Police Lateral  (in the search box type "Police Lateral"). Be sure to include your AZPOST ID Number for your PH.
  • Once the eligibility​ questionnaire is complete, please allow up to 3-4 weeks to be notified if you are selected to begin the hiring process.
  • Upon review of the background packet, only the highest qualified applicants will be contacted and invited for a 1st Trip.  

​1st Trip: We attempt to complete the process in two trips. We do not pay for travel or offer relocation/transition assistance.

  • Physical Agility Assessment
  • Background Packet Interview w/ Detective 
  • Polygraph 
  • Community Interview​

2nd trip:

  • Psychological Exam
  • Medical Exam

Initially hired as a recruit pending successful completion of waiver exams. Promoted to officer at a higher step (4 - 8) based on years of experience prior to FTO.  Out-of-state laterals hired as recruits who do not successfully complete the necessary waiver exams within the times allotted or do not qualify with their firearm may be offered a basic training position or be separated.


In-State S​teps

  • Attend and successfully complete the physical agility assessment
  • Polygraph

  • Medical Exam

Advanced Officer Training

Assigned to the academy to complete administrative tasks, equipment issue, handgun refresher, handgun qualification and decision making.  Familiarization with PPD practices, policies, and procedures. Emphasis on advanced training for a variety of situations and further proficiency skill development in high liability areas.

 (2-3 weeks)      

*Out of state laterals will spend an additional 2-3 weeks for the following: defensive tactics including Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) refresher, impact weapons refresher, emergency driving, Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) and waiver examinations.

Field Training:    Assigned to an FTO squad for 8-16 weeks

 

​Does Phoenix offer hiring bonuses?

No. However, we offer a multi-tiered bonus pay program called Career Enhancement Program (CEP) that is based on an accumulation of points derived from training, certifications, education credits and college degrees. Benefits of up to $7,612.80 are available annually until retirement.  As a lateral, you are eligible to earn CEP pay after you complete Field Training as a Phoenix Police Officer.
