North Mountain Park Renovation Update

Location: Central Phoenix. Located in the northwest area of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve on the west side of 7th Street at Peoria Avenue 

Size: Approximately 37 Acres

 

Public Input and Master Plan: 

An initial Master Plan public input process was held throughout 2023. A Public Opinion Survey was open from November 28 through January 1, 2023.  Feedback from this survey was used to develop a master plan for potential future park amenities and improvements.  

Two design concepts were created, and an open house was held at the North Mountain Visitor Center on April 5, 2023. The public had the opportunity to review the designs and speak with the staff and the design team. A comment form was available to share remarks. For those unable to attend the open house and wishing to provide comments, a Master Plan Concepts Survey was available online from April 5 through April 21, 2023. 

The project team used the feedback to further refine the concepts into one draft master plan. This plan was presented at the follow up open house on June 20, 2023. Once again, the public had the opportunity to review the designs and speak with the staff and the design team. A comment form was available to share remarks onsite and a Master Plan Preferred Alternative Survey was available online from April 5 through Friday, July 14, 2023.

The master plan was approved by the Parks and Recreation Board on November 16, 2023. 

Current Design Efforts: 

The final design of the project began in July of 2025 and is being led by J2 Environmental Design. As of December 2025, the design is at a 30% level. Further phases of the design will continue throughout much of 2026 with the intent of having permitted plans by late 2026.

Tentative Construction Schedule:

The project is currently tracking to begin construction in Fall of 2026, with completion potentially in late 2027. 

North Mountain Park will likely be closed during the extensive renovation project. Other trailhead locations through the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, including the North Mountain Visitor Center will remain open during the work.
