Citizens Offering Police Support (COPS)
The Phoenix Police Department offers the COPS program so that citizen volunteers or college interns can support the department from within in a non-enforcement capacity.
COPS has volunteer assignments in over 40 different specialty details in four different categories:
- Investigations
- Traffic
- Administration
- Crime Lab (with a BS in Biology or Science)
While some COPS Volunteers donate up to 40 hours per week, the minimum requirement is 4 hours per week to support the department. Donated time must be Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-4 p.m.
Steps to join the COPS program:
- Contact the COPS Volunteer coordinator at copsvolunteers.ppd@phoenix.gov to check volunteer opportunities. Please leave your name, phone number and best time to contact.
- An ESOFF application will be sent to you once accepted to be completed and returned to the Employment Services Bureau
- The Employment Services background investigator calls you to schedule an interview
- Polygraph exam
- Reference check
- Drug screen
The approval process can take an average of three months to complete.
