Artist Barbara Grygutis worked with the Street Transportation and Neighborhood Services Departments to design unique entry features for the Sunnyslope Business District.  The gateway includes four, eighteen-foot tall pillars of oxidized perforated steel, positioned at both ends of the bridge that spans the Arizona Canal at Central Avenue.  The form is based on the tilde, a grammatical mark used in Spanish to emphasize sounds.  It also symbolizes water. The artist also designed and fabricated smaller vertical elements in the median islands north of the bridge.
