Barbara Grygutis has worked in collaboration with the Street Transportation and Neighborhood Services Departments to design a unique entry feature to the newly renovated Sunnyslope Business District.  The gateway includes four, eighteen-foot tall pillars of oxidized perforated steel, positioned at both ends of the bridge that spans the Arizona Canal at Central Avenue.  The gateway is designed to create a symbol that could possibly be used in future sculptural markers, if the neighborhood so desires. The design is based on the tilde, as used in Spanish for accent, in computer language, in the sign “equal" and also visually symbolic of water. The artist has also designed and fabricated smaller vertical elements in the median islands adjacent to storefronts that are being enhanced by the Neighborhood Services Department north of the bridge.
