ARTIST:   Mags Harries and Lajos Heder
DATE:   1992
LOCATION: Over 20 individual locations in residential areas bordering SR 51 (south of McDowell Rd. to Ocotillo (south of Glendale Ave.)

Please note, some of the pots have been removed due to changes in reconstruction of SR 51 Walls.

TYPE:   Streetscape
MATERIALS:   Polychrome Concrete & Painted Steel
BUDGET:   $474,000
DISTRICT:   4, 6, 8
ZIP CODE:  85016 & 85006

The project was designed to include 20 art sites with 35 sculptural pieces. Most of the works are distributed along five miles of landscaped bicycle path through residential areas adjacent to SR51, from Brill St. to Ocotillo St. All of the sculptures take the form of vessels. The artists inspired to feature pottery during visits with people along the route before the freeway was built.. “We noticed that almost every home we visited had pottery in the living rooms or on the mantels," said Lajos Heder.

Pottery also has deep significance in the Southwest and throughout the globe. Ranging from simple, functional forms to extraordinary ceremonial vessels, it has been one of the enduring expressions of Native American life and cultures worldwide. The pieces are made primarily of painted concrete and painted steel. The pottery decorations were designed by Arizona artists. The pots were fabricated in Arizona. Individual pieces range in height from two to fifteen feet. The vessels take many forms: seating niches, gazebos, rest stops by the canals, neighborhood guardian vessels, free standing giant vases and teapots and a hummingbird garden. Several smaller vessels adorn the top of one section of noise mitigation wall near Bethany Home Road. The vessels are unique markers for the neighborhoods and serve as rest areas along the extensive bike trails along both sides of the freeway. Varied special planting, seating, and pavers are integrated with the vessels to make them more inviting places.

The completed project has earned awards including a Valley Forward Award in 1992 and a 1992 Arizona Best Award from the Arizona Republic.
