Social Participation 

T​he city of Phoenix is engaging and empowering the 50+ community through social participation in a variety of activities throughout the city. The city is actively working towards becoming an age friendly city through the World Health Organization and American Association of Retired Persons’ (AARP) Network of Age Friendly Communities. 

The city's Library, Human Services, and Parks and Recreation departments all provide a variety of age friendly activities and programs throughout the city. 



​Parks and Recreation

The city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of classes and programs for all-ages and levels. From aerobics to aquatic programs and adult sports leagues, residents may register for a number of age-friendly activities through the Parks Department. The Parks Department also has Community Centers and Neighborhood Recreation Centers all throughout the city that residents may access for open gyms, game rooms, and classes.

The Fit PHX Initiative was created to improve health and wellness in the region and make the Phoenix area one of the healthiest in the nation. 

Through the initiative residents may sign up for free group workout series, find local walking trails through the Walk PHX program or sign up for other healthy initiatives. 


​Senior Centers

The Human Services Department provides programming and services for older adults at 15 Senior Centers.  Each center provides a wealth of opportunities for activity, education and personal development. Some of what participants can expect to enjoy include recreation and social activities, nutrition programs, educational opportunities, and social services such as emergency utility and rental assistance and eviction prevention/move-in assistance. 

Centers also provide ​case management services for areas such as employment, budgeting, social and life-skills development.

The Phoenix Public Library consists of 17 branch libraries throughout the city with each offering a variety of programming for all-ages. Residents may check out a good read, attend special classes, join a book club, and more through the Library system.
