Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington Celebrates HB 2244 Taking Effect

Today marks an important milestone for housing stability in Arizona as HB 2244 officially goes into effect. This new law represents meaningful progress in ensuring fairness for residents who have met their obligations but continue to face barriers due to unresolved eviction records.

I am proud to have been a strong proponent for HB 2244 throughout the legislative process, and I am excited to celebrate its implementation. Earlier this year, I testified before the Senate Judiciary and Elections Committee to emphasize how critical this reform is for the people of Phoenix. In my work as a civil litigation attorney, I have seen too many tenants who paid their back rent and fees still struggle simply because a satisfaction of judgment was never filed. When that happens, families who have done everything required of them can be denied future housing opportunities.

HB 2244 provides a clear and timely solution. The law establishes a straightforward process for submitting proof of payment, removes unnecessary procedural barriers, and ensures that when tenants fulfill their obligations, the legal system recognizes that compliance. HB 2244 gives residents a fair chance to move forward without being held back by outdated or incomplete records.

I want to extend my gratitude to Governor Katie Hobbs and bill sponsor Representative Walt Blackman for their leadership, and to the bipartisan coalition of stakeholders who worked together to make this legislation possible. While more work remains to advance housing stability, the enactment of HB 2244 is a meaningful step that will positively impact thousands of Arizonans.

Phoenix residents deserve a housing system that is fair and today, with HB 2244 officially in effect, we move closer to that goal.
