Swim Lessons at Cortez Pool:

Group swim lessons for all ages and abilities!  Please review the descriptions and requirements for each level before registering.

Note: Each child's swimming ability will be assessed on the first day of lessons and they may be moved into a different class or level that will best benefit the child.


Starbabies:

Recommended for children ages 6 months to 3 years old and must have an adult in the water with them. Parents are taught how to help their child become comfortable in the water by:  Getting face wet and blowing bubbles, Jumping in and submerging, Floating on back, Locomotion on front and back with kicking and pulling.

 
White Star:

Recommended for ages 3 and up who can participate without parental presence. Children are taught: How to recover if they were to fall into a swimming pool, How to float on their back, How to make forward progress in the water without help.

To advance to Red Star level lessons students will be expected to demonstrate the skills shown in the video below:

 
Red Star:

To enroll in this class, the child must be able to jump in, surface, swim 10 feet, float on their back, turn around and get back to the wall without help. Children are taught:  How to tread water, How to dive into deep water, Breathing to the side, The starting mechanics of freestyle.

To advance to Yellow Star level lessons students will be expected to demonstrate the skills shown in the video below:

 
Yellow Star:

To enroll in this class, the child must be able to tread water for 30 seconds and swim freestyle 30 feet while breathing to the side. Children are taught:  To fine tune the mechanics of freestyle, The mechanics and fine tuning of backstroke.

To advance to Blue Star students will be expected to demonstrate the skills shown in the video below:

 
Blue Star:

To enroll in this class, the child must be able to swim 30 feet of freestyle while breathing to the side and 30 feet of backstroke with proper mechanics.  Children are taught:  The mechanics and fine tuning of butterfly, The mechanics and fine tuning of breaststroke, How to perform racing starts and turns.

To complete the Blue Star level lessons students will be expected to demonstrate the skills shown in the video below:

 
Silver Star:

This class is recommended for non-swimmers pre-teen to adults. Participants are taught based on individual abilities ranging from getting their face wet to the basic mechanics of freestyle.

Water Safety Programs:


Cub Club:

This Cigna Healthcare sponsored free program teaches water safety and basic first aid skills to children 7 to 10 years old. All program participants will receive a t-shirt and will compete in a city-wide Olympic event at the end of the season. Space is limited to the first 15 participants that enroll.

 
Discovery Guard:

This Cigna Healthcare sponsored free program teaches water safety and boating skills, use of flotation devices and basic first aid to children 11 to 13 years old. All program participants will receive a t-shirt and will compete in a city-wide Olympic event at the end of the season. Space is limited to the first 15 participants that enroll.

 
Junior Lifeguard:

Junior Lifeguard: This Cigna Healthcare sponsored free program teaches lifeguarding techniques, leadership, responsibility, first aid and CPR/AED training to children 14 to 15 years old. All program participants will receive a t-shirt and swim suit and will compete in a city-wide olympic event at the end of the season.

 
Lifeguard Academy:

This Cigna Healthcare sponsored free program will train and certify participants in lifeguard training, first aid and CPR/AED.
