Councilwoman Ann O'Brien Funds E-Bikes for Safer, Stronger Downtown
Weeks before Phoenix’s next mega event, the 2026 NCAA Women’s Final Four, the Police Department’s Downtown Operations Unit has deployed ten new electric bikes, made possible by Councilwoman Ann O'Brien's direct investment and a partnership with Western Alliance Bank, Downtown Phoenix Inc., and the Phoenix Police Foundation.
Equipped with emergency lights and capable of reaching 28 miles per hour, the e-bikes give officers the speed of a vehicle and the access of a foot patrol, putting them closer to the action in busy corridors, garages, parks, and spaces where cars are far less effective.
Councilwoman O'Brien said, "When Downtown Phoenix Inc. came to me and said our officers needed these bikes, I committed my office's resources and budget because that's what leadership requires, and because public safety is that important. This investment will benefit residents, visitors, and businesses—not only for the Women's Final Four, but for every event that makes Phoenix vibrant.
As Chair of Phoenix's Economic Development Subcommittee, I've seen how public safety and economic growth reinforce each other. Businesses choose to invest where their employees and customers feel secure. Families attend events and return to venues where they feel confident. Visitors come back to the cities that make them feel welcome. Strong public safety not only protects people, it drives investment, fuels growth, and keeps Phoenix competitive.
These new e-bikes increase visibility. They increase mobility. And most importantly, they increase connections between officers and residents, officers and business owners, and officers and visitors. I’m proud to support them, and I’m grateful to Western Alliance Bank for also stepping up in a meaningful way.
This is what good government looks like: practical tools, smart partnerships, and a shared commitment to public safety. This is how we ensure Downtown Phoenix remains vibrant and built for continued economic growth."
