Statement from Councilwoman Laura Pastor on Passing of Arizona Civil Rights Leader Jim Shee

Council District 4 Statement

Jim Shee’s passing is a tremendous loss for Arizona.

Born and raised in Tucson as a Chinese and Mexican American, Jim spent his life fighting for communities too often pushed to the margins. As founder of the Arizona Asian Chamber of Commerce and the Phoenix Asian-Hispanic Alliance, he helped build political and economic power for Asian Americans in Arizona while creating stronger connections across cultures and communities. A small business owner himself, Jim understood how deeply immigrant- and minority-owned businesses shape the identity of our state. During one of the most painful chapters in Arizona’s history, he stood publicly against SB1070 and racial profiling and was present during the U.S. Supreme Court hearing challenging the law, using his voice to defend immigrant and minority communities when it mattered most.

I had the privilege of working alongside Jim and the Arizona Asian Chamber of Commerce on efforts including the creation of the International District in Phoenix. Jim believed deeply in protecting the cultural identity of our neighborhoods and uplifting the immigrant-owned businesses and families that help define our city. His influence can still be felt across Arizona through the generations of leaders and change makers he inspired.

Arizona lost one of its great civil rights leaders this week. My thoughts are with his wife Marian, his children, grandchildren, loved ones, and everyone mourning his passing.
