History Leading Up to the February 2020 Grand Canalscape Grand Opening

Connecting People to Destinations

With more miles of canals than Venice and Amsterdam combined, Phoenix sought funding to transform an underused canal path into a vibrant multiuse path to connect people to each other and to destinations across the city. Grand Canalscape planning began well before two important grants were awarded in 2015. Grant applications were filed and the city received funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation and from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. Together with aesthetics funding from Salt River Project (SRP), the two grants helped Phoenix complete an incredible new recreational amenity that stretches from the Tempe border almost to Interstate 17.
