Overview
Street Maintenance Worker (SMW) Apprentices learn to repair asphalt and potholes, sweep streets and remove debris, conduct street resurfacing, oversee the removal of weeds in undeveloped right-of-ways, grade and dustproof alleys, respond to storm-related issues such as flooded streets and clogged storm drains, and provide wash maintenance.
Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training, 4,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours, and a minimum of 288 related training instruction hours. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as a SMW apprentice. After successful completion of all requirements, apprentices will be promoted into the SMW classification and complete a 12-month probationary period.
