With the summer season approaching and many residents likely to spend time near water bodies, the City of Phoenix wants to raise awareness and potentially save lives through this lifelike scenario.</span> <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}"> </span></p> <p> <span lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto">With 90% of drownings reported in backyard pools, the event took place in a Phoenix backyard. The event was supported with cooperation of Phoenix police officers and firefighters included in the mock scenario. Local media was invited to observe the realistic simulation carefully orchestrated by trained professionals to emphasize key safety principles.</span> <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}"> </span> </p> <p> <span lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto">In the simulation a young child portrayed to be in distress in the water, as the parents of the child were distracted. Spectators witnessed the reaction from the parents to quickly pull the child from the pool, call 9-1-1, and start CPR. First responders arrived and worked to perform proper rescue techniques and procedures. Then, proceeded to load the child into the ambulance as if they would be taken to a nearby hospital.</span> <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}"> </span> </p> <p> <span lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto">Following the simulation, the Phoenix Fire Department and other partners including City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Aquatics Department, Phoenix Police, the Phoenix Fire Foundation, SRP, and the United Phoenix Firefighters Local 493 shared crucial safety tips and resources with the media. </span> <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}"> </span> </p> <p> <span lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto">Those tips emphasizing the importance of never swimming alone, always using barriers including pool fences, wearing life jackets when appropriate, and always supervising children closely around water.</span> <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}"> </span> </p> <p> <span lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto">As the event concluded informational pamphlets, brochures, and other materials containing valuable water safety tips and resources were shared. On Tuesday March 26th, over 500 future Phoenix firefighters took the first step in the hiring process by completing the written test.   <br><br>Applicants who successfully pass the written test will be placed on the Firefighter Recruit eligibility list by the City of Phoenix Human Resources Department. When the list is certified, it will be forwarded to the Fire Department. The Fire Department uses the eligible list to invite applicants for job interviews.  <br><br>Anyone who missed this opportunity but are interested in taking a future written test are encouraged to attend the upcoming Recruitment Information Session. The next session is scheduled for April 3rd.
