Toilets

Think Before You Flush

Ceramic toilet.Let's be frank. Toilets are not "top of mind" for most people. When you think about saving water indoors - think toilets. Toilets account for nearly one-third of indoor water use. Toilets are also a significant contributor to indoor plumbing leaks. Toilet leaks can result in 100,000 gallons of water-waste per year. That's enough drinking water for more than 550 people per year.

Just like new-generation low-energy light bulbs have improved, new-generation high-efficiency toilets now combine water-efficiency with high-performance. No more "double flushing" needed! By replacing old toilets in your home with new-generation high-efficiency products, you can save 20,000 gallons of water in the first five years (enough to fill a mid-sized swimming pool).

It's a New Generation

Find out about Phoenix's program where you can get a financial incentive to replace old high water use toilets.

New-generation toilets are a wise investment. Pre-1992 toilets use more than twice the amount of water than new-generation high-efficiency toilets.

  • Buy a new-generation high-efficiency toilet that uses no more than 1.3 gallons of water per flush. You'll save about $2,000 over the life of the toilet (more than the price of most toilets).

  • Look for EPA's WaterSense labeling that ensures water-efficiency and third-party performance-testing (see Related Links).

  • Maintain product efficiency by using manufacturer-specified replacement parts.
