Phoenix launches a Citywide food drive to assist residents experiencing food insecurity during the holidays.
40th Street from Shea Blvd to Becker Ln
The Street Transportation Department regularly seeks to improve safety for people driving cars, riding bicycles or walking on foot. The Department has identified and opportunity to make safety improvements to the street network on the portion of 40th Street approaching the intersection at Shea Boulevard. An upcoming pavement treatment allows the project team to examine ways to improve safety by possibly implementing a different striping plan.
This page will help you visualize the road as it currently exists and the safety improvements the Department proposes.
The project team is preparing a presentation for a public meeting on Thursday, January 15, 2026 to present the proposal and seek community input. A decision will be made later in 2026 after the team analyzes the community's input.Β
Key elements of proposal: From north of Shea Boulevard to Becker Lane, there is enough room to add a buffer to add space between cars and people riding bicyles. The proposal would change the southbound straight or right turn option to a right turn only with a shared bicycle lane at the intersection of 40th Street at Shea Boulevard. A slight narrowing of all car travel lanes would help guide cars and deter speeding.
Option A - No Changes
Option B - Shared Lane at Shea
