Railroad Safety Improvement Projects
43rd Avenue and Camelback Road and 19th Avenue and McDowell Road
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced $7.1 million in Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant program funds that will support proposed upgrades to the railroad crossings at 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road and 19th Avenue and McDowell Road.
Project Details
Both crossings are currently not protected by gate arms and only have cantilevered signals. Improvements to be made to these two complex and heavily trafficked railroad crossings will include:
1- Installation of gate arms, signalization, and widened sidewalks to comply with the latest Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements,
2- Road upgrades including the realignment of traffic signals and widening.
Timeline
The preliminary design phase will be completed in summer 2025. The full design phase is expected to be completed in fall 2026, and construction is set to begin in fall 2027.
