The sign installation honors individuals with ties to Arizona who have received the Medal of Honor. These individuals have served the country and Arizona with heroic valor and honor.

The Medal of Honor is the United States government's highest and most-prestigious military decoration that may be awarded to recognize those who risk their lives above and beyond the call of duty.

The installation honors 37 recipients, including: William Alchesay, a White Mountain Apache leader, who was awarded for gallant conduct during the Indian Wars, Isaiah Mays, a Buffalo Solider who was awarded for his actions during a robbery in the Arizona Territory, Manuel Mendoza, the “Arizona Kid" for his heroism in World War II and Joseph Foss, a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve awarded for his heroism serving in the Marine Fighting Squadron 121, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing.

“The Medal of Honor recognizes our country's most valiant men and women, with 37 of these honorees having ties to our state," said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “This signage installation helps to bring awareness to these local heroes so that their sacrifices may never be forgotten."

“We must honor our veterans from the present and past who have fearlessly protected our state and country," said District 2 Councilman Jim Waring. “It's been an honor to assist in making the Arizona Medal of Honor Row a reality."

The idea for the Arizona Medal of Honor Row was brought to Councilman Waring by Phoenix resident Archie Dicksion. “Arizona throughout its history has had individuals that have stood head and shoulders above others in protecting those around them," said Dicksion. “So that others may know their deeds, we dedicate this row to them."

The Arizona Medal of Honor row was made possible by the Phoenix Street Transportation Department. Crews from the department's sign shop designed, fabricated and installed all of the signage along Medal of Honor Row. The project was funded by the District 2 Office.

A list of the Arizona Medal of Honor Recipients can be found here: https://avhof.org/inductees/medal-of-honor-recipients/

| https://www.phoenix.gov/district2 | News | district-2 | District 2 | Jim | Waring |
