Statement about City Pools for Summer 2020https://www.phoenix.gov/newsroom/parks-and-recreation/1227Parks and Recreation6/4/2020 11:00:00 PMhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newssite/Lists/NewsArticle/Attachments/1227/pool.jpgStatement about City Pools for Summer 2020

City of Phoenix public pools are closed for summer 2020. The Parks and Recreation Department is following guidance from the City Council related to its policy for when facilities could safely open as trends related to COVID-19 decrease.

After discussion about city pools during the June 2 City Council meeting, there was no consensus among the Council to open them.

Follow the latest updates about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Phoenix's recreational facilities, amenities and programs on Phoenix.gov/Parks and the various city social media accounts.

---

The following statement about the city's public pools was shared with the community on May 12:

One of the most popular City of Phoenix services offered to the community is its 29 public pools. Thousands of residents take advantage of aquatics programs each year through swimming lessons and simply enjoying a break from the heat. The city takes great pride in offering this service.

The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions caused the city to dramatically reevaluate operation of these facilities. During a typical summer in the Valley, city pools are open to the public six days a week from Memorial Day weekend through the end of July. During August through Labor Day, 11 select city pools are open on weekends only.

In response to guidance received today from Governor Doug Ducey that relaxes standards for utilizing public swimming facilities, the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department will work with the Phoenix City Council to determine a plan to safely operate its pools with the health and well being of staff and customers at the forefront of concern.

Once the City Council provides feedback, the Parks and Recreation Department must be allowed 30 days to prepare its pools for aquatics-related activities. It takes that amount of time to complete hiring and training of staff and to prepare the pools for swimmers.

The department is carefully considering all aspects of operation such as physical distancing standards and restrictions on large groups and gatherings. The Parks and Recreation Department will also follow Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines to ensure that it provides the safest, most optimal experience for customers.

Follow the latest updates about the 2020 summer pool season on Phoenix.gov/Parks and the various City of Phoenix social media accounts.

https://www.phoenix.gov/parksNewsparks-and-recreationPeople play in a city poolParks & RecGregg Bach602-350-1506602-262-4994gregg.bach@phoenix.govhttps://www.phoenix.gov/newssite/Lists/MediaContact/Attachments/22/Gregg_Bach.jpgPhoenixParks

This year’s event will look a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to adhere to physical distancing requirements, the ceremony will be a virtual presentation, hosted from the Employee Memorial wall adjacent to City Hall. This does not remove the honor or commemoration that the city will dedicate to the departed employees and their families. Employees who we have lost to COVID-19 will also be remembered. Mayor Kate Gallego, City Manager Ed Zuercher, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams, Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner, and representatives of the city’s employee unions and associations will take part in the ceremony. In addition, Phoenix Police and Fire honor guard, pipes, and drums will participate in the virtual memorial. To date, the memorial wall includes the names of 88 employees who lost their lives in the course of their duties.

https://www.phoenix.gov/phxtvVideo
